Rugi Farmers Cooperative Society

Rugi Farmers Cooperative Society is a coffee-growing cooperative based in Nyeri County, Kenya. The cooperative brings together thousands of smallholder coffee farmers and works with local coffee factories, or washing stations, where farmers deliver freshly harvested coffee cherries for processing.

Rugi focuses on supporting its members through farmer education, agricultural training, sustainable farming practices, and access to resources for farm improvements. Farmers receive training in areas such as crop husbandry, land management, quality control, and Good Agricultural Practices, all with the goal of improving both coffee quality and long-term production.

Many of Rugi's members farm relatively small plots of land and grow varieties closely associated with Kenyan specialty coffee, including SL-28, SL-34, Ruiru 11, and Batian. Once harvested, coffee cherries are delivered to Rugi-affiliated washing stations, where they are sorted and processed before being prepared for export.

Igutha Coffee Factory in Nyeri is one of the washing stations associated with Rugi Farmers Cooperative Society. Hundreds of smallholder farmers deliver coffee to Igutha, creating traceable community lots that represent the farmers, growing conditions, and careful processing of the surrounding area.

Through this cooperative structure, individual smallholder farmers are able to combine their harvests, access processing infrastructure, receive agricultural support, and bring distinctive coffees from Nyeri to the specialty coffee market.
