Buku Abel

Nestled in the highlands of Ethiopia’s Guji Zone, Buku Abel is a small coffee-growing community where generations of farmers have cultivated Arabica coffee in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Formally a kebele, the smallest administrative unit in Ethiopia, Buku Abel lies in the Hambela Wamena district of the Guji Zone within the Oromia Region. The village itself sits at approximately 2,350 meters above sea level, with the surrounding coffee plantings at elevations around 2,275 meters, placing it among the highest coffee-growing communities anywhere in the world. These extreme elevations provide ideal growing conditions, with cool temperatures, abundant rainfall, and fertile soils that allow coffee cherries to mature slowly and develop exceptional sweetness and complexity.

Unlike large coffee estates, Buku Abel is made up of hundreds of smallholder farmers, many of whom cultivate just a few hectares of land. Coffee is often grown alongside native shade trees and food crops using traditional farming methods that have been passed down through generations. The dominant plantings are the selections 74110, 74112, and 74158, varieties developed in the 1970s by Ethiopia’s Jimma Agricultural Research Center and valued for pairing disease resistance with refined cup quality at high elevations.

The harvest runs from roughly November through January. During this window, farmers selectively handpick only ripe cherries and deliver them to the local processing site, operated by Esayas Bareso, where they are meticulously hand-sorted before drying. For naturally processed lots, whole cherries are laid out on raised African beds and turned frequently over a drying period that can stretch two to three weeks, then hand-sorted a final time once they reach the ideal moisture level. This slow, carefully monitored drying is central to the clean, intensely fruited character for which the community’s coffees are known.

The naturally processed coffees from Buku Abel have earned international recognition for their vibrant fruit character, floral aromatics, and remarkable clarity. Notes of tropical fruit, berries, chocolate, and warming spices reflect both the region’s unique terroir and the dedication of the farming community. Through a commitment to careful cultivation and processing, Buku Abel has become one of the standout coffee-producing communities in Ethiopia’s Guji Zone, showcasing the exceptional quality for which Ethiopian coffee is celebrated around the world.
