Luis Duarte is a Salvadoran coffee producer and steward of Finca San Luis, where he continues his family’s longstanding commitment to cultivating specialty coffee in the mountains of western El Salvador. The farm sits just outside the town of Concepción de Ataco in the Ahuachapán department, not far from the Santa Ana volcano, and has been producing coffee for more than a century. Working alongside his son, Luis oversees roughly 25 well-shaded hectares spread across a dozen or so separate plots at elevations between about 1,280 and 1,400 meters above sea level.
For more than fifty years, San Luis was planted almost entirely in Bourbon, and decades-old Bourbon trees still anchor much of the farm. When coffee leaf rust swept through El Salvador roughly a decade ago and killed off many of the original trees, the family responded by thoughtfully diversifying their plantings. Today the farm grows older Bourbon and Typica types alongside rust-resistant selections such as Tabi, Castillo, and Centroamericano, an H1 hybrid that crosses Sarchimor with the Ethiopian heirloom variety Rume Sudan, as well as smaller plots of Caturra and Pacamara that are harvested and processed separately.
Together, the Duarte family manages several estates in the Ahuachapán region, including Finca Miravalles and Finca San Miguel, along with the Tacubaya mill, where their harvests are processed. This combination of farms and milling allows the family to oversee quality from tree to export, and in recent years they have expanded into carefully executed honey and natural lots, with dry-process coffees hand-sorted and dried slowly on raised beds over fifteen to twenty days.
By combining generations of coffee-growing experience with a focus on quality, sustainability, and thoughtful farm management, and through careful cultivation and meticulous processing, the Duarte family has earned recognition for producing coffees that reflect the rich volcanic terroir and enduring coffee heritage of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec Mountain Range.
