Ahuachapán

Ahuachapán is one of El Salvador’s premier coffee-growing regions and forms part of the renowned Apaneca-Ilamatepec coffee-growing zone, which stretches across western El Salvador. The region is characterized by volcanic mountains, rich soils, elevations ranging from approximately 1,000 to over 1,800 meters, and a mild climate that allows coffee cherries to mature slowly.

The volcanic soils are rich in minerals and provide excellent drainage, while frequent cloud cover and cool nights help preserve acidity and develop sweetness in the coffee. Many farms in Ahuachapán are also shade-grown beneath native trees, creating a healthy ecosystem that supports wildlife and protects the soil.

Coffee has been cultivated in Ahuachapán since the mid-1800s, and the region has become internationally recognized for producing coffees with exceptional balance, sweetness, and complexity. Today, it remains one of the country’s most important specialty coffee origins, known for both traditional cultivars like Bourbon and Pacas and newer hybrids such as Centroamericano H1.
