San Martín

San Martín is a diverse region in northern Peru where the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains descend into the upper Amazon Basin. This unique meeting point between mountain and rainforest creates one of Peru’s most distinctive coffee-growing environments, characterized by fertile soils, abundant rainfall, and a mild tropical climate that supports exceptional Arabica coffee production.

Coffee cultivation expanded rapidly throughout San Martín during the latter half of the twentieth century as farming families settled the region in search of fertile agricultural land. Today, the region is one of Peru’s leading producers of specialty coffee, with thousands of smallholder farmers cultivating coffee on mountainsides between approximately 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level. These higher elevations, combined with cool nights and warm days, allow coffee cherries to mature slowly, developing greater sweetness, complexity, and balance.

The landscape of San Martín is remarkably biodiverse. Much of the region borders protected cloud forests and tropical rainforests, making it home to countless species of birds, orchids, mammals, and other native wildlife. Many coffee farms are shade-grown beneath native trees, helping preserve biodiversity while protecting soils, conserving water, and creating a healthier environment for coffee cultivation.

The region’s rich volcanic and alluvial soils, combined with consistent rainfall and humid mountain air, provide excellent growing conditions throughout the year. Producers often harvest by hand, selectively picking ripe cherries to maintain high quality standards before processing the coffee using traditional washed, natural, or honey methods.

Beyond coffee, San Martín is known for its strong commitment to sustainable agriculture and organic production. Numerous cooperatives and producer associations throughout the region provide technical training, quality improvement programs, and direct market access, enabling smallholder farmers to compete in the global specialty coffee market while investing back into their local communities.

Today, San Martín is recognized as one of Peru’s premier specialty coffee regions. Its combination of Andean elevation, Amazonian biodiversity, sustainable farming practices, and dedicated family producers produces coffees celebrated for their sweetness, vibrant fruit character, balanced acidity, and exceptional clarity in the cup.
