Memphis is one of the country's great freight cities. Its airport is among the busiest cargo airports in the world, and the warehouses, rail yards and river terminals around it run overnight shifts that pour coffee when the rest of the city is asleep. The medical district, home to St. Jude and several large hospital systems, is the other giant workforce.
