Grown in the lush southern highlands of Ruvuma, the Makonga Cooperative draws its name from one of four neighboring villages—Makonga, Mtwala, Kilosa, and Kioka—whose smallholder farmers contribute cherry to the group’s washing station in Tanzania’s Mbinga District. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 1,500 meters, the farms are planted primarily in Bourbon-type cultivars, processed using traditional washed methods.

Cherries are hand-sorted via flotation, depulped, then fermented for 1–2 days to break down the mucilage before being washed clean and dried slowly on raised beds for 2–3 weeks. The result: a clean, sweet cup that balances bright citrus with comforting depth.

Expect a silky, medium body with brown sugar and sweet black tea tones lingering through the finish. As the coffee cools, more delicate notes rise—well-steeped orange tea, tangerine, and a touch of citrus peel provide top-end lift without overpowering the cup. Makonga is an exceptionally drinkable coffee—bright yet smooth, sweet yet clean—a perfect daily brew that doesn’t compromise complexity.
