Every brewer runs on the water coming out of the wall behind it, and that water has a hardness value you can look up today. There are three routes to it. Your utility publishes an annual water quality report, and hardness is often listed there in milligrams per liter or grains per gallon. If it isn't, call the utility and ask. Or buy a hardness test strip, run it under the tap, and read it yourself in about a minute.
One caveat before you go looking: an annual water quality report may not carry hardness at all. Hardness isn't a regulated contaminant, so a report built around the regulated ones has no obligation to include it. If it isn't there, you ask or you measure.
Once you have the number, place it. The Maryland Geological Survey publishes a four-bucket classification: soft is 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard is 61 to 120, hard is 121 to 180, and very hard is anything above 180. If your strip reads in grains per gallon, one grain per gallon is 17.118 mg/L, so a strip reading of 7 gpg lands at about 120 and sits on the moderately hard line.

That's roughly a six-fold spread on one maintenance question.
The reason isn't carelessness. There is no published standard for this class of machine. The Specialty Coffee Association lists SCA-315, Cafe Batch Coffee Brewers Specifications and Test Methods, among the standards it still has in development. Until that document exists, every interval in circulation is a house number, published in good faith and built around somebody else's equipment and somebody else's water.

A pound of coffee is about twenty 12-ounce cups, so a building that knows its weekly poundage knows roughly how much water its brewer has heated.
