
Catuai
Catuaí is a compact, high-yielding Arabica cultivar bred in Brazil by the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) from a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra. It sits in the Bourbon-Typica genetic group, and its name is usually translated from Tupi-Guarani as "very good." Two fruit-color lines circulate under the same cultivar name — Yellow Catuaí (Catuaí Amarelo) and Red Catuaí (Catuaí Vermelho) — and together they account for an enormous share of the Arabica planted across Brazil and Central America.
Origins and Breeding History
IAC made the original cross in 1949 at Campinas, São Paulo. The two parents were a Yellow Caturra selection and a Mundo Novo selection; the resulting hybrid population was first catalogued under the internal designation H-2077. Both parents trace back to Bourbon: Caturra is a compact single-gene mutation of Bourbon found in Brazil, while Mundo Novo arose from a spontaneous Bourbon x Typica-type cross.
The breeding objective was straightforward. Mundo Novo was vigorous and productive but tall, which made it expensive to prune and pick. Caturra was short and easy to work but less vigorous. Catuaí was meant to combine Mundo Novo's productivity and rusticity with Caturra's dwarf architecture, so growers could plant more trees per hectare and harvest them more efficiently.
After more than two decades of pedigree selection, IAC released Catuaí to Brazilian growers in 1972. It moved into Central America over the following years — reaching Guatemala around 1970, Honduras in the late 1970s with commercial release in the early 1980s, and Costa Rica in 1985 — where it became one of the varieties that made full-sun, high-density farming practical.
Yellow Catuaí vs. Red Catuaí
This is the distinction most people are actually looking for, and it is more often misstated than explained.
They are the same cross, separated by fruit color. Yellow and Red Catuaí both descend from the single 1949 Mundo Novo x Caturra cross. The yellow fruit trait entered through the Yellow Caturra parent; red-fruited plants segregated out of the same population and were selected forward as their own lines. Neither is a mutation of the other, and neither was bred afterward from the other.
Yellow Catuaí is not unripe Red Catuaí. A ripe Yellow Catuaí cherry is yellow at full maturity and never turns red. If you are picking, sorting, or floating Yellow Catuaí, ripeness is judged by feel, sugar, and the shift from green through pale to a deep saturated yellow — not by waiting for red. Confusing yellow-fruited cultivars with an unripe stage is a common error in retail descriptions.
Both have named IAC line numbers. Growers rarely buy "Catuaí" in the abstract; they buy a numbered line. Commonly planted selections include:
- Yellow Catuaí lines: IAC 62, IAC 74, IAC 39, IAC 86, IAC 32, IAC 66 and IAC 100
- Red Catuaí lines: IAC 144, IAC 99, IAC 44, IAC 81, IAC 15 and IAC 51
Differences in vigor, ripening window and productivity between these numbered lines are generally larger than any difference between "yellow" and "red" as categories.
Agronomically they behave alike. Both are low-statured with medium sieve size and intermediate maturation, and both are rated as having no useful resistance to the major coffee diseases. Altitude ceiling, nutrition demand, planting density and rust susceptibility are effectively the same for the two colors.
In the cup, color is a weak predictor. No formal sensory distinction between Yellow and Red Catuaí has been established. Producers and buyers frequently report a tendency toward fuller body in reds and a softer, brighter impression in yellows, but blind cupping often fails to separate them, and the effect of elevation, ripeness at picking and post-harvest work swamps whatever the color contributes. A high-grown, carefully sorted Red Catuaí will outcup a poorly picked Yellow Catuaí every time, and vice versa. If a lot is offered as "washed Yellow Catuaí," the informative words are the elevation, the farm and the processing — not the word yellow.
One practical asymmetry is worth knowing: judging ripeness by eye is harder on yellow-fruited trees, because the contrast between an underripe and a ripe cherry is narrower than the green-to-red shift on a red-fruited tree. Farms running selective hand picking on Yellow Catuaí often lean harder on trained pickers and post-harvest density sorting.
Plant Structure and Agronomy
Catuaí is classed as dwarf or compact, though it is noticeably less compact than Caturra itself. Leaf tips are green — a quick field marker that separates it from bronze-tipped material. Bean size is average, and trees typically come into first production in their third year.
Its short internodes and strong lateral branching are the reason it dominates mechanized Brazilian farms: the plant tolerates wind and heavy rain, holds its cherries well, and can be planted at high density. A common reference density is around 5,000 to 6,000 plants per hectare under single-stem management, though densities vary widely with region and pruning system.
The trade-off is appetite. Catuaí has a high nutrition requirement and rewards intensive fertilization and liming; run it lean and yields fall off quickly. Yield potential ranges from medium to very high depending on the line and the region, with Brazilian selections generally out-producing the same-named lines grown in Central America.
Altitude and Quality Potential
Catuaí's quality potential at altitude is rated as good rather than exceptional. World Coffee Research places its optimal altitude above roughly 1,300 meters in the 5 to 15 degree latitude band, and above roughly 1,000 meters at latitudes beyond 15 degrees — which is why the same cultivar produces a dense, sweet, high-scoring lot in the Central American highlands and a softer, chocolate-forward commodity lot on lower Brazilian ground.
That latitude adjustment matters when reading offer sheets. A 1,000-meter Catuaí from southern Brazil and a 1,000-meter Catuaí from Guatemala are not comparable growing conditions.
Where Catuaí Is Grown
Brazil is the center of gravity. Catuaí and its numbered lines are planted across every major producing region, including Sul de Minas, where its density tolerance and mechanical-harvest compatibility suit the terrain and farm scale.
In Central America the concentration is highest in Honduras — trade reporting on Honduran varieties puts Catuaí at close to half the Arabica grown there — with substantial plantings in Guatemala and Costa Rica. It is also grown in Nicaragua, Mexico, El Salvador and Peru, often alongside or blended into lots with other Bourbon-descended material.
Disease Susceptibility and Varietal Renovation
Catuaí's central agronomic weakness is disease. It is highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) and also susceptible to root-knot nematodes and coffee berry disease. In Brazil, dry winters and management intensity have historically kept rust pressure manageable. In wetter, warmer Central American conditions it is far more exposed.
The 2012 coffee leaf rust epidemic across Central America hit Catuaí plantings hard and triggered national renovation programs. Much of the replanting shifted toward rust-resistant Catimor- and Sarchimor-derived material such as Lempira, IHCAFE 90, Parainema and Castillo. Those programs have not displaced Catuaí — it is still the backbone of many farms — but they did end the assumption that a susceptible cultivar could be planted indefinitely without a resistance strategy.
IAC has also released a rust-resistant Catuaí selection, IAC Catuaí SH3, described in the breeding literature as a dwarf Arabica cultivar carrying leaf rust resistance and drought tolerance.
Processing and Cup Profile
Catuaí takes post-harvest work well, which is a large part of why it survives in specialty despite its unremarkable baseline. It is processed natural, pulped natural and fully washed, and increasingly through extended and anaerobic fermentations in microlot programs.
Broadly:
- Washed Catuaí reads cleaner and more linear — nutty, cocoa-leaning, with moderate malic or citric acidity and a tidy finish.
- Pulped natural and honey lots gain sweetness and viscosity while keeping structure; this is the default for much of the Brazilian specialty crop.
- Natural Catuaí pushes body and ripe fruit — plum, red apple, brown sugar — and is where lower-elevation lots gain the most.
- Extended fermentation and anaerobic lots can produce results well outside the cultivar's usual range, which is why Catuaí shows up in experimental programs far more than its reputation suggests.
Common descriptors across well-prepared Catuaí include milk chocolate and cocoa, caramel and brown sugar, almond or hazelnut, and gentle apple or citrus acidity, with a medium body and a clean, unshowy structure. It is a cultivar that rarely dazzles and rarely disappoints — which is exactly what makes it useful as a blend base and as a dependable single origin.
Roast handling follows from that. Catuaí's sugars and moderate density make it forgiving through first crack, and light-to-medium roasting preserves the acidity that high-grown lots carry.
Related and Descended Varieties
Catuaí sits in the middle of a large Brazilian breeding family, and its genetics run in several directions:
- Topázio — a Mundo Novo x Yellow Catuaí cross first selected at IAC in the 1960s, low and compact with deep yellow cherries and no meaningful disease resistance.
- Catucaí — an Icatu x Catuaí cross whose first selection was made in 1988, carrying moderate rust resistance from its Icatu side.
- Yellow Bourbon — the other well-known yellow-fruited Brazilian cultivar, and a useful comparison point for anyone trying to understand what fruit color does and does not signal in the cup.
Common Questions
Is Yellow Catuaí better than Red Catuaí? No. They come from the same cross, share the same agronomy, and have no established sensory difference. Judge the lot, not the color.
Is Catuaí the same as Caturra? No. Caturra is one of Catuaí's two parents. Caturra is more compact and generally more acidic and delicate; Catuaí is a little larger, more productive, more rain- and wind-tolerant, and more forgiving to grow.
