Mobile is a port city with an industrial workforce and an old downtown. The port, the shipyards and the aircraft assembly plant at Brookley run shift-work break rooms around the clock, and the University of South Alabama and its hospitals add a large weekday and overnight crowd. Downtown along Dauphin Street and out through Midtown hold the cafes, bakeries and restaurants, and the churches here are old and full. Then there is Mardi Gras, which Mobile has celebrated for more than three centuries, filling downtown with parade crowds for weeks each winter. Most accounts here are a plant, office or hospital break room, a cafe or bakery downtown or in Midtown, or a church serving a lobby crowd.
