Montgomery is Alabama's capital, and its weekday runs on government: the Capitol, the state agencies around it, and the offices and firms that work with them. Maxwell Air Force Base brings a military workforce and the students of its Air University, and the auto plant and its suppliers run shift-work break rooms on the edge of town. Downtown along the riverfront holds the restaurants, cafes and hotels, which serve both business travelers and the visitors who come for the city's civil rights history.
